Remote Control Cars come in all types of sizes, styles and shapes. With so many types and features to choose from, it can be a difficult job to decide which one is the best fit for you.

Why an RC Car?

This first question can help a hobbyist define what it is about the hobby that is most appealing. If the hobbyist wants an RC car because he or she has been admiring the look of the cars, then the engine won't matter as much as the style. If a hobbyist has gone to some of the races and is interested in the competition, then the hobbyist will be more interested in the style and type of car.

A hobbyist more interested in appearance should invest in the car that is the most visually appealing. A hobbyist with an eye towards a trophy case will want to look at the local racing rules and research what cars run best on the local terrain.

How much free time do you have?

Different RC cars require different amounts of time to assemble, customize and maintain. So, a hobbyist needs to decide how much time he or she is willing to invest in the hobby.

If the hobbyist does not have a lot of time for this hobby, then a nitro version should not be considered. Although nitro powered cars can be faster and more exciting to race, they require more maintenance to keep them in good condition than an electric car which means less driving time.

Where Is the RC Car Going To Be Driven?

Certain types of RC cars are made for certain types of terrain. An on road car with a Sports Car body won't go very fast if at all on grass and rocky terrain. However, off-road models are wasted on smooth long paved roads or driveways. So, before investing in a car, a hobbyist needs to consider where he or she will be able to use the car.

How Much Can you Afford?

The RC car hobby can be very expensive or not depending on the preferences of the hobbyist. Part of this expense will be in the type of car desired. Nitro powered cars typically cost more than electric powered cars. Equipment and parts meant for serious racing are not cheap. Customizing a car can, also, be expensive depending on how much time and work the hobbyist is willing to put into it. If the hobbyist lacks ability, tools or time to do it him or herself, customization of the car can become very expensive very quickly.

Taking a couple minutes to answer the basic questions can help make the endeavor into the RC hobby more fun and exciting.
